Educate Yourself!
According to the United Nations, more than 1 billion land animals were raised for food in South Africa in 2013.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • More than 95 percent of the country’s egg-laying hens are confined in battery cages, spending nearly their entire lives in virtual immobilisation.
  • More than 50 percent of pregnant sows spend their lives in crates where they are unable to exercise, fully extend their limbs, or engage in many important natural behaviours. Encouragingly, according to SAPPO all new pens created will be open.
  • Chickens raised for meat are bred for rapid growth, reaching their slaughter weight by six weeks of age, putting tremendous strain on their bones and organs, sometimes rendering them immobile. - The National Center for Biotechnology Information
  • Extensive scientific evidence shows that intensively confined farm animals are frustrated, distressed, and suffering.

You can help by asking your food retailer if their eggs come from cage-free or free-range farms and their pork is sourced from gestation crate-free facilities, and encourage them to increase their offerings of delicious, healthy plant-based foods. They want your Green Rands, so the more people that put pressure on them to step up and get with the GreenMondaySA programme, the better.
