You don’t even have to skip your morning cappuccino – you can use soy milk instead! In fact, there’s practically a plant-based version of every food you love.

- More than 95 percent of the country’s egg-laying hens are confined in battery cages, spending nearly their entire lives in virtual immobilisation.
- More than 50 percent of pregnant sows spend their lives in crates where they are unable to exercise, fully extend their limbs, or engage in many important natural behaviours. Encouragingly, according to SAPPO all new pens created will be open.

You can help by asking your food retailer if their eggs come from cage-free or free-range farms and their pork is sourced from gestation crate-free facilities, and encourage them to increase their offerings of delicious, healthy plant-based foods. They want your Green Rands, so the more people that put pressure on them to step up and get with the GreenMondaySA programme, the better.
